What is your skate
name?
Afternoon D-Lightning AKA Nooner
What is the
significance of your skate name and number?
"I wish I had a cooler story but, to be honest, I have
a thing for lightning bolts and I wanted to draw one on my face. I do like the
song though, and I think it sends a great message. My number is the area code
from my hometown, the major metropolis of Hartselle, Alabama."
How did you get
started playing roller derby?
I was out at Double Down and came upon a derby wedding,
which I didn't really understand but thought it was funny and all the girls
seemed cool. Afterwards, I went to freezone where there were girls skating and
promoting "Whip It." I knew I had to see the movie and, after I did,
I looked up SCRG and did some "life reorganization" so I could
completely immerse myself in my beloved new sport.
How long have you
been skating?
January will be one year.
What is your favorite
derby position?
"It's so hard to pick, so how about instead I tell you
what I like about each position? I like jamming when I juke past a girl who I
think is an amazing blocker and when I get a grand slam. I love blocking when I
can successfully hold a great jammer back for a long time or when I land a
great hit and send a girl (especially when they're bigger than me) flying. I
enjoy being a pivot when my strategy works and when we get off the track and
the other skaters look at me like they're impressed with how we came together
on the track. "
What is your greatest
derby achievement so far?
Making travel team A and all my teammates cheering my name
after the announcement ... I still get a bit choked up when I think about it.
What is your favorite
part of skating with Sin City Rollergirls?
"I can't pick a favorite; I'm too fickle ... Constantly
pushing myself, being around such a great group of inspiring women, personally
changing and becoming more of who I was meant to be and not being afraid to
flaunt it."
Do you have a derby
crush? Who is it?
"Who isn't it!?! Suzy Hotrod, Bonnie Thunders,
Luludemon, Smarty Pants ...Every girl on Team USA ..."
What is your day job?
Snoozefest ... I work in corporate marketing for a large
casino company.
Who is the biggest
influence in your life?
My mom and my grandmother (Mama Sue) — they're two very
brave, kind and inspiring women.
What is the strangest
thing in your purse or wallet right now?
BUST Magazine (It's awesome; you should check it out).
Tell us one thing
about yourself that we wouldn't expect...
"I like purple, all things neon and lightning bolts.
No, that's not right. Ever since I was little, I've been able to ignore
everything else around me when I watch TV. It usually never bothers me, but it
always annoys other people because they'll try to talk to me and I can never
hear them."
